The Kahnawà:ke Sports and Recreation Unit (SRU), along with the Kahnawà:ke Youth Center (KYC), were holding the first-ever Recreation Summit for our community. They hired a consulting company that didn't seem to understand the ask. I was a Project Assistant at SRU at the time, and I was given the opportunity to 'take a stab at it.' I decided the first thing that was needed was a logo for the Recreation Steering Committee. A committee that would determine which projects would be tackled first and where money would be spent, all in the name of recreation for our community.
Once I gained the confidence of both the directors from SRU and KYC, this project really took off. The next step was to build a visual guideline since numerous designers across three organizations would be working on this.
Next came the merch for the Recreation Summit. As a welcome package, every person who participated in the summit was given a notebook, pen, lanyard, fidget spinner, and sticker. The directors thought that giving out swag would be a memorable event, and they most definitely didn't want to waste such a strong design on a one-time logo.
During the Summit, we had different stations for the community to come to and get informed, ask questions, and give their opinions on what the community needs. To make it visually easy for people to know which table belonged to which station, I made table cards that were in clear centrepieces so they could stand up vertically straight.
